Elementary notions
Counting allows us to know the total number of things or people in a group; in order to do so, we separate the items from the group one by one, and we assign the next larger number to each item removed, till none is left and the total number is discovered.
In other words, counting is answering: how many?
Beforehand, in order to count, we must know the unique numbers which identify each quantity of things. The following chart shows the first ten (10) numbers and the quantities they represent:

Do you think there are more numbers? Yes, there are, lots of numbers; look at the sky on a starry night, there are many, many stars in the sky... so are the numbers needed to count them.
