**Pre-algebra** is the name given to mathematics courses typically taught at the end of elementary school or the beginning of secondary school, before formal study of elementary algebra begins.

Such courses typically include the following subject areas:

- Negative numbers
- Factoring numbers
- Fractions, rational numbers, decimal numbers and percents
- Exponents, powers and roots
- Properties of arithmetic operations
- Order of operations and variable expressions
- Solving simple equations
- The real number line
- Inequalities
- Basic ideas of data analysis and elementary probability
- Perimeter, area and volume of simple geometric shapes
