An independent variable is the variable in a function that is operated on, or the input in the function. When
$ f(x) = y $
$ x $ is the independent variable and $ y $ is the dependent variable. Time is commonly used as the independent variable in functions modelling real-world events.

Example

$ y=x^2 $ Here, $ x $ is the independent variable while $ y $ is the dependent variable.
